Netflix recently released a new period drama based on Jane Austen’s 1817 novel Persuasion. The novel is one of the most complex works filled with love, remorse, and regret that takes Anne Elliot a long way. Starring many famous faces, including Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, and Henry Golding, the new adaptation failed to reach viewers’ expectations and made fans furious as creators tried to modernize the layered depiction of the regency era.

Unfortunately, this movie couldn’t portray Anna’s serious and mature point of view. Instead, they gave her more of a cheerful outlook, and Dakota seemed more happy than miserable. Persuasion received a highly unfavorable critical response from viewers 

Twitter is flooding with comments and reviews about this new adaptation of Persuasion, and fans are complaining that they changed the persona of Anne Elliot. By transforming a subtle and sensible woman into a sassy, outspoken version with instant flipping moods. Moreover, the dialogues made it more disheartening and clumsy, like when Mary says, “The thing about me is I am an empath.” 

Dakota’s direct interaction with the audience in the movie destroyed the emotional weight of the storyline, which was meant to represent a gentle and capable middle daughter. This direct address turned this regretful character into a humorous rom-com queen who isn’t much bothered by the return of her past love. Therefore, the movie has received 31% of the review aggregate from Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDb gave it an average rating of 5.6 out of 10.
