Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun: Will Smith to Partner With David Oyelowo for the Book’s Film Adaption on Netflix

The new generation is all about superheroes and their supernatural powers. From DC to Marvel, from Superman to Spiderman, we can’t get enough of superheroes. We always define superheroes who have great powers and a lot of responsibilities to save the world.

We all had heard this proverb: “Great power comes with great responsibilities”

Recently, on Twitter, Strong Black Lead tweeted a photo of Will Smith and David Oyelowo, announcing their collaborative effort into the film adaptation of Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun, an upcoming fantasy book by Tola Okogwu.

Both Will Smith’s and David Oyelowo’s production houses Westbrook Studios and Yoruba Saxon, respectively, are collaborating together with Netflix to produce and bring brand new content on the screen for kids.

This book will be published on June 9th, 2022. The plot of the book explores a young girl, Onyeka, who can control her curls with her mind. She is soon enters the Academy of the Sun to train her powers, where she faces numerous challenges.

Seems like we will have a new YA hero in Onyeka. So, let’s dig a little deeper into Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun.

Is there a release date for Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun?

As the production and filming didn’t even start yet. So, Netflix didn’t officially confirm the release date. But if the production started in the middle of this year, we can expect Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun will be up on our screens at the end of next year.

However, for more details, we have to wait a little longer.

What do we know so far about Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun?

The British-Nigerian author’s book develops around a teenage girl, Onyeka, who has massive curly hair, which is often the subject of ridicule. She always feels agitated when strangers notice her dark-curly hair but her best friend Cheyenne is always supportive. One day, she discovers her curls have magical powers when they help save her drowning friend.

Her mother informs her she is a Solaris, a secret group of people with powers and takes her to Nigeria, to the Academy of Sun. The Academy of Sun trains kids with supernatural powers and teaches them how to control their powers. But as soon as she learns about her origin and powers; she discovers dark magic threatens her school.

Can she save her school? We’ll have to wait until the book and the movie are available to find out.
