When we heard of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio being released on Netflix, we certainly were looking forward to a masterpiece. And now that Netflix has released an official teaser for the film, it looks like we aren’t in for a disappointment. Take a look here:

This Netflix Original has an ensemble cast, the likes of which are unseen in animated films.  We see Ewan McGregor as Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto along with Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Pearlman, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton. Pinocchio also introduces us to Gregory Mann, who voices Pinocchio.

Who is Guillermo del Toro?

An Academy award-winning director, Guillermo del Toro Gómez is certainly not a newbie to the filmmaking industry. The Mexican filmmaker is an icon for his work in films like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. These two got him Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture, respectively. Most of his work relies heavily on its complexity and humanness.

Guillermo takes unrealistic genres like horror and fantasy and makes them as relatable as they come, something fans truly admire. When fans heard he would be working on reviving this classic, they certainly knew they should be expecting a great film that finally does justice to its source.

Why Pinocchio on Netflix surpasses the Disney rendition

Anyone who has read even a little into the myths, legends, and folk stories will know the importance they hold in enriching cultures all around the world. The Grimm brothers brought to light many of these that would have been overlooked otherwise. However, it was Disney that truly revived this piece of inheritance we received from our ancestors. Despite its good intentions, Disney couldn’t always satisfy viewers. Be it intersectionality or respecting the source material enough not to change it, the production couldn’t deliver what viewers wanted.

One thing that has changed majorly from the last century to this is the amount of representation. What used to be an industry majorly centered on its white creators is gradually becoming a means for POC to express themselves. Netflix has absorbed an extra part in this transition as it continues to support initiatives like CON TODO, produces series like Maya and The Three, and supports diversification in terms of language.

Being an Italian story, it is quite heartening to watch another POC bring it to light. It isn’t just Toro’s directorial prowess that should be your reason to stream Pinocchio on Netflix but also the notion that this film is a symbol of how far we have come in terms of intersectionality and representation.
