Netflix caught the attention of the subscribers when it brought to light the unsolved skyjacking that has eluded law enforcement people, the FBI, and detectives for 45 years. The anti-hero perpetrator is known as Dan DB Cooper at the center of the Netflix Docuseries, DB Cooper: Where Are You?! remains a mystery today even though the FBI had put everything at stake to find the man. This may sound like a script for the next Hollywood crime movie, but it’s actually based on a true event that took place in 1971. The case generated mass media attention with even civilian sleuths joining the investigation to find the mystery man and they are still searching for him to this day, in vain.

Dan DB Cooper is just an alias, his true identity was never uncovered. In 1971, Cooper bought a $20 flight ticket to Seattle. Once onboard, he hijacked the plane asking for $20,000 in cash and parachutes. The ground authorities and the security forces were forced to cooperate to save the lives of the 36 passengers. Right after he successfully traded the passengers for the money, he told the pilots to fly in the direction of Mexico City. He had clearly instructed them to fly under 10,000 feet and below 200 knots. Shortly after, he jumped off the plane into the night with his bag of cash and parachute.

FBI had searched the area where he dropped, extensively but found nothing. Initially, they assumed him dead. But in 1980 a part of Cooper’s ransom money turned up on a riverbed confirming that he survived. Over the years, Profilers and the FBI investigated and had theories about the identity of the man. They linked him to a decorated military veteran and pilot with a criminal past, Robert Rackshaw. However, they could never prove it because of a lack of concrete evidence. Without any further leads, it became a cold case in 2016.
