Netflix’s schedule for April releases is already looking to be the streaming site’s best so far. And recently, in a Twitter post, they announced a new documentary about the “near”-luxurious American brand Abercrombie & Fitch.
The title for the new documentary as announced through the post is White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch. Netflix has slated an April 19th release date for the documentary.
The fascinating thing about a documentary like this is that it will almost certainly elicit some nostalgia among Netflix customers. This is a story with a lot of narrative threads running through it, including consumerism, teen fads, exploiting sex to market a product, and the demise of the American shopping mall. With the latter coinciding with Abercrombie’s recent troubles.
Highly acclaimed and talented director Alison Klayman directs the film. Klayman is best known for her award-winning documentary, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry.
But she has also made a number of other documentaries, including Take Your Pills, which premiered on Netflix in 2018. Jagged, a documentary on musician Alanis Morissette is also in her resume. The Brink, 11/8/16, and The 100 Years Show are among her previous endeavors.
Abercrombie & Fitch—A history full of controversy
Abercrombie & Fitch Co. has gone through various transformations during its history, beginning as an outdoor and hunting store before becoming a cultural apparel paradise for teenagers in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Customers drifted away from the previously successful apparel line in the 2000s and 2010s due to shifting public attention, controversy, and litigation.

Asian Americans chastised the company in 2002 after graphics on T-shirts depicting stereotypes of Asians. The corporation responded by removing the items from their shelves.
Moreover, the brand was (still is) accused of using explicit images in ad campaigns to catch the attention of the population.
