J Cole is about to hit a much-awaited mixed tape, provided that Kanye West gives him the permit. The ‘She Knows’ singer set the stage on fire with his performances at the Dreamville festival recently. He was joined by Ye’s rival Drake, Big Sean, Nelly, and a long list of other artists in the festival. But what surprised fans was Jermaine Lamarr Cole’s performance of an unreleased song.

The audiences already loved the song, and the rapper wants it to be released for streaming as well. But what keeps him waiting now is Ye’s approval, since he sampled the singer’s previous songs throughout his mixed tapes. Here is how both Cole and the Dreamville President are trying to woo West.

Music sampling is quite common in the industry, where one artist uses someone else’s existing song or beat to make another one. In the case of J Cole, he sampled several of Ye’s music through his unreleased mixed tape called Friday Night Lights. Out of which, he performed the ‘Villematic’ song at the Dreamville festival which has beats of Ye’s 2010 song ‘Devil in a New Dress’.

During the performance, the singer even gave a shout-out to Kanye West. He requested him to clear the samples and said, “I appreciate it.” Dreamville’s President also took to Twitter to state how Cole used multiple Ye samples and will require permission before moving ahead with the release of the mixed tape. West, on the other hand, has not publicly acknowledged the sample permissions.

But J Cole and Kanye West are not new to each other. The two have worked together previously, even a decade ago.

A look into Ye and J Cole’s work together

Like many of Ye’s relations with rappers, his equation with the Dreamville rapper has also been rather complicated. Ye produced four songs for ‘The Come Up’ mixed tape back in 2007. He even featured in West’s ‘Looking For Trouble’ song. Soon, Cole went from considering West as his idol to his competitor. He even released the ‘False Prophets’ album, which was supposedly a dig at his ‘idol’. Now, it will be seen whether he gets permission for the music samples by West.
