There is nothing sadder than getting a show you were invested in canceled. Now Netflix always announces when a show gets scrapped, but that was not the case with On The Verge. But why was the show discontinued in the first place, and after getting canceled, why did Netflix not announce the cancelation? Let us try to find out.

On The Verge canceled by Netflix

According to actor and creator Julie Delpy, the Netflix dramedy On the Verge has been canceled after only one season.

Delpy — who also worked as executive producer, writer, and director — confirmed the news in a modest Instagram message to a fan who asked for an update.

“Cancelled,” she wrote,  “but they forgot to announce it was canceled.”  “Yeah, waiting to hear,” Delpy said in October last year when asked about a possible Season 2 on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.

Supporters flocked to the responses to voice their displeasure with Netflix’s decision. Not just with the cancellation but also with the fact that the streaming giant never even informed fans about it.

Elisabeth Shue, Sarah Jones, Alexia Landeau, Mathieu Demy, Troy Garity, Timm Sharp, and Giovanni Ribisi also appeared in the series. The show was set in pre-pandemic LA, where four women, a chef, a single mom, an heiress, and a job seeker, delve into love and career, with a heaping helping of midlife crises.

But why was the show canceled?

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has just a 60% approval rating at the time of its premiere. Netflix’s own weekly stats have previously been a representation of the series’ weak viewership.

On the Verge never cracked the Top 10 TV series unlike shows like Bridgerton, debuting at #8 and peaking at #5 after almost a week on the service, according to statistics from the daily Top 10 Television Shows. The series was no longer hitting the daily Top 10 after 12 days on Netflix.

Another major contributor to the underperformance of the show could be its release coinciding with Squid Game. Squid Game being a global blockbuster might have completely overshadowed On the Verges’ release.
