Netflix is keeping its Kdrama and anime fandom well-fed. Over the past few years, the streaming giant has not only been adding classic Kdramas and animes to its respective catalog. The zombie thriller All Of Us Are Dead took home the cake for being one of the most-watched series this year. But did you know that it was adapted from a Webtoon of the same name written by the talented Joo Dong-geun? Popular Webtoon, Lookism is about to enter the same leagues.

Webtoons and Manhwas are very popular among Asian entertainment fans. Not to mention that most of the series that get adapted from these visual works become big hits. Putting this recipe to the test, Netflix is adapting the fan favorite Naver Webtoon Lookism, marking the streaming giant’s first such venture in animation.

What is the first original webtoon animation on Netflix about?

We have seen many popular Webtoons getting adapted as series, Business Proposal and True Beauty among the most popular. However,  Lookism is the first time that a Webtoon is getting a Netflix Original animated adaptation.

For those unfamiliar with the term, Webtoons are a cartoon or comic strips published online. And the home to the most popular webtoon is Naver. In 2014, a talented Webtoon artist Park Tae Jun released Lookism on Naver and it went on to become one of the most popular works of all time.

The Webtoon, which was originally in Korean, is available in Chinese, Thai, Japanese, French, and English. Moreover, Lookism, which will soon be on Netflix, has garnered 807 million views for its English version. Globally, the Webtoon has about 8.7 billion views.

Lookism follows Park Hyeong-seok, a high school student. Hyeong-seok’s life is miserable because of all the bullying for being overweight. That is, until one day he magically wakes up to be a tall, good looking boy. Since then, he is determined to make the most of this opportunity.

When will Lookism be releasing on Netflix?

The Netflix Original anime adaptation is all set to release on the 4th of November. Studio Mir is in charge of the animation. It has previously worked on DOTA: Dragon’s Blood and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. Fans of the Webtoon are more than excited to watch the series. And to put the cherry on top, Lookism will be featuring an original theme song by the mega-popular Kpop boy group ATEEZ.
