The magical keys whisper when they want to be found, so no matter how hard you are looking for them you will never find a key unless they desire it. When you hear an eerie whisper out of nowhere, chances are that you have found a magical key.
The chances are also very little, mainly because the keys choose the person who will find them. So you have to be twice as lucky to land on a magical key from the Locke & Key universe.
The keys want to be used as weapons, it is as simple as that, but the user of the key decides its intention. As long as you are not turning into a psychotic evil villain; everything is cool.
The Lockes are blessed with keys, or maybe cursed
Fortunately (or misfortunately) the Key House is founded on top of a gateway between two different dimensions; which are the world of humans and the world of demons. This is probably the reason why only the Lockes can hear or use the keys.
The Lockes also have the responsibility to protect the dimensions gateway which is situated inside the sea caves under Key House; and as long as they are protecting the gateway, they have the final power over the keys.
Adults and their inability to remember the magic
For some reason, the adults in the Locke & Key universe can not remember the magic. They might see it right in front of their eyes, they may even be a part of it for some time, but the second they move away from it; poof.
The demons of Locke & Key explained
While these creatures from the other dimension have the ability to spot our world, they can not just get in freely; the demons need to possess a human body in order to survive in our world. They need a host to stay alive.
But what if they do not find a host? The demons die and turn into this piece of metal called ‘whispering iron’. All the magical keys are made of this ‘whispering iron’.

Demons are of course powerful creatures, but they just can not take away the keys from the Lockes. A Locke must give away the key willingly; then and only then a demon can have it.
So these were some rules of the universe of Locke & Key explained; you can now go take a stroll in Matheson.
