Netflix has been on a roll for giving international shows a platform. And the success of foreign shows has only proved that language is no barrier if the series is amazing. Germany’s action-packed spy show Kleo, released in August 2022, is one such new addition. A history, a conspiracy, and a revenge-thirsty spy..sounds intriguing, isn’t it? To add to it, a trailer boldly says, “This is a true story. None of it happened.” And the show’s ending is as bold as this opening statement, with the central focus being on the infamous Red Suitcase and, of course, our protagonist, Kleo. But when the final episode of the show closed, we just had one question: Will Kleo meet the German officer again?

Kleo: Story so far

The show is based in East Berlin circa 1987. The situation was tense as it was a time of political unrest between East and West Berlin. These were the times when spies infested rival governments, national interest was utmost, and surviving bloodshed was a task. And Kleo’s main character Kleo Starub (played by Jella Hasee), is right at the center of this situation. An eastern German assassin working for the Ministry of State Safety (a government body), she serves diligently to serve the nation. Her assignments come to a break, and before becoming a mother, she is imprisoned for false accusations.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Kleo is released from prison. She sets on a mission to find answers behind her imprisonment. This is when the East Berlin femme-fatale meets Sven Petzold, a cop from East Berlin. He chases her to Mallorca to solve the Big Eden case. Seeing his persistence, Kleo decides to make him an ally.

During their hunt together, they come across a red suitcase that holds secrets about East Germany and American Government, amongst other secrets that weakened her belief in the cause she worked for. Kleo and Sven decided to publish these documents to the people of the country, but that never happened.

Sven leads Min to the bag, and she sells it to the US for her own advantage. The US assures that secrets from the bag remain intact. This causes a major rift between Kleo and Sven while also making Kleo question everything that she worked for. This betrayal makes us wonder if there’s any hope for the duo moving forward.

Will Kleo and Sven continue to get closer? *Spoiler Alert* 

Post her release, while on her mission, Sven and Kleo’s paths cross at the Massive Eden disco club, wherein Kleo murders an East German army officer for betraying his country. From the get-go, Sven suspects Kleo to be the culprit. 

And in hilarious attempts to prove his suspicion, the cop ends up being the laughing stock at his workplace. In an attempt to win a job at BND, Sven sets on to solve a case for Min Sun. Eventually, in a turn of events, the relationship between Kleo and Sven slowly turns from hostile to friendly. And his sympathy for Kleo’s plight quickly becomes a priority over the job.

However, Sven’s marriage keeps them at a distance. He opens up to Kleo after his wife cheats on their marriage and upon finding the red suitcase, Kleo and Sven get intimate, showcasing Kleo’s faith in him. However, the trust is short-lived. Min Suns threaten Sven to inform cops about Uwe’s murder if he doesn’t help the former in acquiring the suitcase, and he obliges.

Will this incident stop Kleo from getting close to Sven again? Kleo’s role model, Comrade Ramon’s advice to keep away from emotions, echoes in her mind. If Straub returns as an assassin, will she let feelings get in between her mission, or does the love between Kleo and Sven bloom?
