Less than two months ago, Netflix revealed its plans for Sixty Minutes. The German action drama was set to follow the story of an MMA fighter who ended up with only an hour to save his relationship with his child. While the story is said to be about a father’s struggle to keep custody of his daughter, it also had the world wondering if the whole thing could have been based on a real-life story. From dissecting the film’s probable twists to checking out the potential individuals it could be about, here is everything we know about the upcoming martial arts flick.
What is Netflix’s Sixty Minutes about?
Back in October, the world of mixed martial arts finally got its Netflix break. After trying their hand in various genres over the years, the streaming giant decided to give fans something a little different on January 19, 2024. It was a German flick titled Sixty Minutes, directed and even co-written by Oliver Kienle. The movie was said to star Emilio Sakraya in the lead role as an MMA fighter named Octavio.
While he was in the lead, the star was joined by Marie Mouroum, Dennis Moken, Paul Wollin, and a couple more others on the cast list. Although the cast was stunning enough, the storyline of the drama was what pulled everyone in. It would follow the story of a father who had 1 hour to get to his daughter’s birthday to keep custody. However, to make it on time, he ended up skipping out on a fight, which left him on the run from criminals who bet on him.
While it becomes a race against time as he tries his best to make it to his daughter, fans cannot help but wonder if the story was based on an actual fighter and his life.
Is Netflix’s Sixty Minutes based on a true story?
In recent years, Netflix has been giving the world more and more true stories. While most of them have been horrifying documentaries that could scar even the bravest, this time, they chose to go another way. Although the MMA world once had an Octavio on the scene, Sixty Minutes was not based on his true life stories. Instead, it is said to be completely fictional and a potential work of art.
The film has purely been a creation of the creative minds of screenwriter Philip Koch and the film’s director, Oliver Kienle. However, for a brief moment in time, some fans who followed the gritty world of professional cage fighting ended up thinking the story was based on a world-renowned former Jiu Jitsu black belt holder, Octavio Couto Da Silva.
Shortly before the news of the film broke, news of his tragic passing came to light. That was what ended up confusing the world.
Who was Octavio Couto Da Silva?
Back in August of this year, the tragic news of the world-renowned Jui Jitsu master, Octavio Couto Da Silva, shook the world. The combat champion had fallen off a seawall in Lake Como, Italy, while he was visiting for a friend’s wedding. The Brazilian-born fighter had quite a winning streak, but had chosen to retire to help train others. During his active years, he won gold medals back to back in 1993 and 1994.

He was even one of the founding members of Alliance Barra Academy, where he trained dozens of students. While his martial arts career seemed to be astounding, his MMA run was a bit of a train wreck. In his brief career as a fighter, he unfortunately ended up losing most of his fights and was not a fan favorite.
