In recent times, Netflix has given huge exposure to international content, especially to manga adaptations. The most successful and recent example is the live-action adaptation of One Piece. However, among other well-known adaptations, Alice in Borderland has also caught fans’ attention with the season 3 rumors. The 2020 Japanese series instantly became a fan favorite with its thrilling, adventurous plot.

Although there were no official statements regarding the renewal of the series for the third season, a recent post on Netflix’s X (formerly Twitter) indicated otherwise. All of this made fans question: is the series indeed coming back with season 3?

Is Alice in Borderland coming back with Season 3?

When in December 2022, season 2 was released, it gained 216 million hours of viewership, with a boost in the first season’s viewership as well. Still, there was no news about the third season for most of this year. However, social media has been hyped up with several viral posts of new posters found on the subway in Japan. The poster featured the streaming giant’s logo with ten cards in two rows, five in each.

While fans jumped in to decode what it meant, one of the X users’ explanations seemed relatable. He broke the code for the first row like this: “3 sp[A]de 2 c[L]over 2 d[I]amond 1 [C]lover 2 h[E]art”. And for the second one: “5 hear[T] 1 [H] eart 4 hea[R]t 5 spad[E] 2 h[E]art”. By matching the numbers with the card’s letters, it is spelled “ALICE THREE”.

Interestingly, the second season ended and wrapped the story somewhere around the same point as the manga did. Therefore, it was unlikely to get another season for the same. However, playing cards was a crucial component throughout the series. With the recent tease, Netflix might have silently renewed the series for yet another season. If Netflix decided to bring a new season, what could it be about?

What could be the third season of the sci-fi show about?

When the second season ended, there was a mystery around the Joker. Based on the ending of the previous season, the third season could center around the Joker being the villain. Maybe the Joker could be the mastermind behind the games while Arisu and the other surviving players might still be stuck in the Borderland.

Moreover, there is a strong chance of the third season getting its adaptation from one of the manga creator’s Borderland spin-offs: Alice on Border Road or Alice in Borderland Retry. Notably, apart from having the same premise, Alice on Border Road and Alice in Borderland do not have anything in common. Therefore, there might be a chance of Alice in Borderland Retry getting a chance for the adaptation.

Despite all the uncertainties, fans are as excited as they were when the season 2 trailer was released.
