Hollywood industry is a tough place to make your mark, even if you’re an insider with great contacts. Zoe Saldana is one of them.

But things were not always easy for The Adam Project star, like now. She faced tough competition back during her struggling days and was even asked to change her name.

What’s in a name?

The American actress first came into the limelight after receiving a major role in Center Stage. However, it was only after the subsequent release of films like Crossroads, Drumline, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl that made Saldana a recognizable face.

Her first major studio role was in JJ Abrams’s Star Trek, in which she played Uhura. Later, she was the main female lead in James Cameron’s highest-grossing film Avatar.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, while Zoe was promoting and talking about her new release Netflix’s Sci-fi film The Adam Project. The actress spoke about her initial days in the industry. And how her former management team asked her to change her name.

Zoe said, “When I did [2000 film] ‘Center Stage,’ I remember being discouraged by my management at that time to use my name,”

The actress quickly added that it was not out of spite or malice. But it was her team looking out for her, helping her to make it. She actress said, “That was her doing the best that she wanted for me, but I still knew that I liked my name.”
