To the world, she is the fantastic singer behind Bad Guy that got everyone vibing. To the industry, she is an Oscar winner, but to Gen Z, Billie Eilish is a phenomenon. Her singing did not just escalate Eilish’s soar to popularity but her persona. The When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Despite being told by radio stations that she won’t make it big because her songs were too sad, the singer persevered because she had a strong sense of who she was. However, as ironic as it is, Eilish’s strong sense of who she was started dulling when she entered a pop star’s glitzy and glamorous life.

Despite having a fandom of millions under her name, Eilish, as she grew in the public eye, was confused about who she was. Upon closer notice, you can see that very clearly in her style change. At the start of her career, Eilish stuck to wearing only baggy outfits. She wore them so much to the point that people believed she owned the trademark of baggy clothing, if there was one. Her style was so prominent that Good Will Hunting thought it was a category when he wrote, “She had Billie Eilish style.” Not just in clothing but also in her hair color. She moved from blue to an electric green color to a blonde.

Eilish then decided to change things up a bit and was brutally trolled for the reason that it has proven to be more difficult to find than Nemo.

Eilish revealed the hate she received: “I’m a s*** and I’m a sell-out and I’m just like every other celebrity selling their bodies, and Woah! What the f*** do you want? It’s a crazy world for women, and women in the public eye.” All this whiplash messed with the singer’s strong sense of identity that she was once so confident about.

I honestly don’t feel desired, ever. I do have this worry that I felt so undesirable that I may have occasionally tried too hard to be desirable. It makes me sad to think about it,” Eilish said. The singer is often applauded for being public about her insecurities. But more often than not, the applause dulls out the fact that she is also facing the same issues.
