Remember when the entire world sat on the edge of their seats in anticipation of something in April 2022? And this was not a World Cup or the Oscars we are talking about. It was the infamous Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard court trial that had everybody binging the drama like a Netflix series. After all, there is something about court dramas that gets netizens buzzing like a beehive. Especially if the fighting parties are A-list celebrities from Hollywood.

It all started in 2018 with The Washington Post op-ed in which The Ward actress penned down her experiences of speaking out against sexual abuse. This led to a lawsuit against her by Depp’s legal team. Seeking $50 million in damages, their claim was that the article had severely damaged his career. And the rest is history. Notorious for its docuseries that follow similar themes, netizens had an inkling that the streaming giant, Netflix, would not sit out this opportunity. Lo-and-behold, Netflix officially announces Depp V Heard to release on August 16.

It will include courtroom testimonies along with clips from mainstream news and social media platforms to give a bird’s-eye view of the impact this trial was having worldwide. One may think that docuseries covering this highly controversial event would reignite public interest in the now fairly dormant topic. After all, Netflix has become quite popular for diving into the traumas of victims through their true crime and social documentary shows. But the reaction Netflix’s announcement has had online may surprise you.

Netizens have some harsh criticisms for Netflix

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor may have won the case, but his fans are enraged that Netflix is choosing to drag on the unfortunate topic. What’s more, even Heard’s supporters are showing their displeasure over Netflix trying to bank on her defeat. One Twitter user who is not having it simply said, “I can’t go through this again.

Some are displaying frustration over Netflix’s continuing trends of profiting off other people’s grief.
