Henry Cavill becomes synonymous with whatever role he takes on. This may have to do with the fact that he often finds himself becoming a part of big movie franchises that already have a dedicated fanbase or that he plays the role down to the last morsel. Whatever the case may be, the actor is a magnet when it comes to audiences and action genre character staples. Another star who has emerged as a fan favorite is Ryan Reynolds. While both have had quite sorry endings with DC, there is more that connects them.

The Superman actor’s destiny before landing in James Gunn’s hand seemed to be in a conundrum and it becomes clear as day when you look at the list of roles that had Henry Cavill’s name on it. This includes Ryan Reynolds’s catastrophic DC failure with Green Lantern.

Green Lantern released in 2011 determined to write history at the box office with a budget of $200 million and the star power of Ryan Reynolds. However, what unfolded was one of the biggest flops of a superhero movie. What became the Deadpool actor’s biggest flop was actually looking for its Hal Jordan in Henry Cavill. The British actor was almost launched as Green Lantern into the DC universe before meeting his career-defining role as Superman.

The Superman actor was not the only one that the makers had their eyes on before finalizing Ryan Reynolds. Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake, and Michael Fassbender could all have been potential Green Lanterns, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter in 2009.

Could Henry Cavill have saved Green Lantern?

That Ryan Reynolds was the fault in Green Lantern‘s stars is not a very popular narrative but it does exist. From having numerous spectacular speeches with Green Lantern at the helm of affairs to a big budget and big stars, the 2011 DC film had everything going for itself. Yet nothing that it delivered managed to strike a chord with the audience.

With the information that Henry Cavill could have played the role, many wonders if the fate of Green Lantern could have been different. While there is not a hint of doubt that the British actor would have done his best, much like Reynolds. But if the same recipe that involved a neon green CGI costume was pasted on him as well, the result would have likely been the same.
