Starring Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson as the protagonist, Netflix’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion started streaming yesterday. The movie follows Anne Elliot, daughter of a superficial aristocrat living at Kellynch Hall. Even after belonging to a family of spendthrifts, she is more of a sensible and compassionate person.

Written by one of the most significant novelists in English Language history, Jane Austen, Persuasion is a challenging narrative. After several film and television adaptations, it was a tough call to attract an audience as the story has its moments and the difficulties it poses for authentic interpretation. Now, this modernized representation of a classic story seemed to have cast down the hopes of Austen fans further.

Netflix’s Persuasion is a transformed modern aesthetic of Austen’s subtle novel

Directed by Carrie Cracknell, Persuasion arrived on Netflix in a revamped style. The trailer and cast interviews already revealed that the movie has a modern touch. Simpler dresses, comic stances, and changes in characters’ dialogues were also apparent. The director herself stated the same in one of her interviews. “We wanted to adapt this story with a version of Anne who’s incredibly contemporary, strident, and funny,” said Cracknell.

Moreover, she said they wanted to remodel the traditional ways of the Regency era by giving voice to Anne Elliot. For instance, we saw Dakota, aka Anne, looking more like a contemporary young woman speaking directly to the viewers. Unfortunately, this creative experiment with the classic novel of Jane seemed to be despised by fans as they felt the movie had lost a crucial element, the language because they filtered that degree of realism mixed with irony and burlesque and made it prosaic.

In a recent post on Twitter, a fan commented on the misguided language of the movie, for they didn’t get to see more lines from the famous novel.

Therefore, fans are disheartened that they get to experience the spirit of Austen’s compelling writings.
