Over the years, there have been some truly iconic celebrity couples. For a huge part of the 1990s, the only couple anyone talked about was Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp. The superstar couple of Winona and Johnny was also a fan favorite, and many people wanted the relationship to last. That&#8217;s why when the two decided to call it off after a few years together. The whole world was shocked. But none were more affected than the two.
Winona and Johnny were one of those couples that appeared everywhere together, whether it be events or premiers. As a result when the two separated it was a huge surprise to all.
So let us take a look back at one of the saddest breakups of the 20th century.
<h2>The break up of Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp</h2>
Everyone recently has been talking about the huge high-profiled case of <a href="https://netflixjunkie.com/tag/johnny-depp/">Johnny Depp</a> with his <a href="https://netflixjunkie.com/netflix-news-is-this-the-bee-ambers-dog-stepped-on-fans-connect-rowan-atkinsons-latest-netflix-series-to-the-amber-heard-meme-man-vs-bee/">ex-wife Amber Heard</a>. While the case certainly made a lot of news for well over three weeks, it doesn&#8217;t even come close to the news that Winona and Johnny&#8217;s break-up made in the early 90s.
Depp, then 26, and Ryder, then 18, fell in love on the set of their film Great Balls of Fire. Later, they were both cast in Tim Burton&#8217;s horror-tinged fantasy, Edward Scissorhands, a year later, where their relationship grew.
During filming, Depp got the tattoo &#8220;Winona Forever&#8221; on his arm. And before long, the couple was engaged. They were inseparable, attending every red carpet event together.

Years later, Ryder explained the significance of her bond with the <a href="https://netflixjunkie.com/netflix-news-is-pirates-of-the-caribbean-film-series-available-on-netflix-where-can-you-watch-the-beloved-jack-sparrow-johnny-depp-online/">Pirates of the Caribbean</a> hero. &#8220;He was my first everything.&#8221;
However, it wasn&#8217;t in the stars for the couple. Ryder and Depp separated in 1993, after only four years together. What had transpired clearly affected the <a href="https://netflixjunkie.com/netflix-news-johnny-depp-starrer-2005-flick-charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory-continues-in-netflix-top-10-for-maximum-weeks-compared-to-others/">Charlie and the Chocolate Factory</a> star. He even altered his tattoo from &#8220;Winona Forever&#8221; to &#8220;Wino Forever.&#8221;
Months after his breakup from <a href="https://netflixjunkie.com/tag/winona-ryder">Ryder</a>, Depp was back on the saddle with Burton on his next feature, Ed Wood. However, the quirky director saw that something was off with the star.
Depp, according to Burton, would appear on set in the morning with tears streaming down his cheeks. 
Burton <a href="https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/films/1622966/johnny-depp-winona-ryder-relationship-break-up-split-engaged" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a> at that time, &#8220;I felt weird to be around him like he wasn’t acting like Johnny anymore. It’s almost like Winona took Johnny&#8217;s soul. Johnny’s love.”

And after a long time, Johnny Depp is rumored to return to the big screen with a Beetlejuice sequel.
