Vampires were a hot commodity back in 2008 when Twilight was reigning supreme and TV networks were churning out shows like The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. But since then the vampires have fallen out of favor, until the new Netflix show, First Kill hoped to create a resurgence for the genre. Something similar had happened to the romcoms, a staple in Hollywood back in the 2000s. Let’s find out whether the streamer was successful in luring the viewers.

What is the show about?

Two teenage girls Calliope and Juliette form a connection in high school. As their relationship deepens, their true identities threaten to tear them apart. Calliope is the daughter of a family of famous vampire hunters. On the other hand, Juliette is a vampire from a prestigious vampire family. The two probably could have worked things out if their parents weren’t preparing them for their first kill, a kind of coming of age ceremony!

Decider writes: “SKIP IT. First Kill on Netflix could have been a fun teen supernatural series. But its storytelling is so clumsy it’s just very hard to watch. We know that narration is something that teen shows like to use a lot, and it’s especially relied on in whatever we see debut on The CW. But when almost every other scene has a character’s “inner thoughts” being voiced, it’s a sign that what’s on-screen isn’t doing enough to move the story forward.”

Elsewhere, Polygon’s review is more positive.

No matter how uneven some aspects of First Kill are, with an epic love story at its center it has the potential to give audiences, specifically young people who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, a show that validates them.”
