Since seasons one and two of Bridgerton followed the books, fans thought the third season too will follow the books and have Benedict and Sophie as the central couple. But fans are rather excited about being wrong because the third couple is revealed to be Penelope and Colin. They have more build-up than any other couple on the show, and so showrunner Chris Van Dusen thought them as the apt match for Bridgerton season 3.

Penelope’s underlying love for Colin is subject to sympathy from the viewers since Season 1. Fans of the couple felt the jealousy Penelope felt towards Marina when Colin was courting her. So fans are sure to passionately feel for everything they do as a couple because of their long connection with the pair.

Chris’ interview with Variety revealed a lot about how their story would pick up. He was asked how the sex and the romances of season 3 will compare to the previous two seasons.

He explained how both seasons had male protagonists with dark pasts: Simon’s childhood trauma, and Anthony’s relationship with his father. Because of that, Colin and Penelope are the couple that bring comedy to the show.

Elaborating on that he said, “I think we’re gonna get to play a lot of that this season. But I want to balance that out with quite a bit of sexiness and romance.” Van Dusen also shared how the new season will also push Polin to explore their more serious sides, something we haven’t quite seen onscreen in previous seasons, especially with Colin.

The Showrunner reveals the biggest challenge he has faced and Penelope’s weight loss journey

During the interview, Van Dusen was also asked about Penelope’s weight loss in the light of her being the lead. This question is based on the plotline in Bridgerton book, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, in which Penelope has lost weight over the years and was “ideally curvy”. Chris replied to the question by sharing how they think Penelope is beautiful as she is and weight loss just isn’t the part of her story. And we could not agree more.

“Her being a wallflower in our show I think is about her level of confidence more than it is about her outward appearance. So I think that’s more what we’re playing with this season.” This makes sense, given how we can see women of all sizes and shapes in the Netflix series.
