We are on the precipice of the release of season 2 of The Witcher. With the show dealing with the themes of war, courage, vanity, and prejudice, there are bound to be some very dramatic scenes and incidents. With these come many unforgettable dialogues. We have compiled a list of some of the best quotes from season 1 of The Witcher.
On destiny and tragedy
Here’s an excerpt from JRR Tolkien’s classic books- The Lord of The Rings:
“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
The Witcher is a Netflix series filled with moments where both, characters and viewers question what the point of everything is. However, the creators constantly remind fans that it isn’t the characters that are deciding the course of action, it is fate.
To make sense of it, here are a few quotes from The Witcher about destiny.
“You can’t outrun destiny just because you’re terrified of it. It’s coming”
“All of our choices draw our destinies closer”
“It’s hard to regret something you didn’t choose”
On moral grounds
The Netflix Original revolves around Geralt, a morally gray character. He isn’t your typical hero like Jon Snow, nor is he a total anti-hero like prince Hamlet. The man hangs in the middle, much like Captain Jack Sparrow, but in much more dire circumstances. Geralt doesn’t let his actions be controlled by a “good“, but he does try avoiding “evil” at times.
Geralt was good at what he did, and inevitably, accumulated a great sense of guilt over the course of time and his career. Not only that, the show contains many wise characters and their take on tragedy, guilt, and incandescent bravery visible in small actions and words. All this is proof of the complexity of characters and gives viewers a fresh perspective on moral gray areas.
“There is no such thing as dark or light magic. Nothing in this world is as simple as that”
“Nobody smart plays fair”
“We have to cling to something. If we don’t, the world descends into chaos”
Which of these quotes do you most resonate with? What others do you think belonged to the list?
