‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Producer Hits Back at Ryan Gosling’s Year-Old SNL Spoof
The 2009 James Cameron-directed movie Avatar was one of the biggest movie projects of all time. Taking science fiction animations to a whole another level, the flick brought to us a cinema experience unlike any other in its time. The fact that Cameron perfected the movie for thirteen years is evident in the unexplainable beauty of the people of Na’vi and the cinematic brilliance of Pandora. Avatar in 2009 had a huge impact on everyone, from moviegoers to movie makers, given how it set the standards of what a good cinematic experience is, way too high.

We can all sit and chat about the meaningful storytelling and intriguing characters of the flick. But if you were to just start ranting about the font that the masterpiece of a movie chose, you would be quick to be deemed crazy. However, thanks to a pre-taped SNL sketch starring Academy award-winning actor Ryan Gosling, fans took notice of how the Oscar-winning movie just used a font as ordinary as the ‘Papyrus’ for its title.
Ryan Gosling’s Avatar spoof reached Avatar: The Way of Water headquarters
In 2017, SNL dropped a skit that followed a man inching closer to insanity as no one around him shared the same sentiments as he does regarding the choice of the title font in the 2009 Avatar movie. From flipping the table at his therapy session to stalking the graphic designer, Gosling fails to wrap his mind around the fact that the designer was “thoughtless” enough to choose the Papyrus font for a blockbuster International movie.
Now, if we were James Cameron and spent thirteen years of our life on a movie that was one step ahead of technology in terms of being advanced, and someone randomly chose the Papyrus font anyone can find on their computers for the title, we would be pissed.
But Cameron has no qualms whatsoever; in fact, he was a fan of the font. The Titanic director even took a jibe at Gosling and his obsession with the font. However, with the upcoming sequel, the Avatar: The Way of Water crew cleared the air on the Papyrus font.

Producer Jon Landau told ET that the new movie has created a font for itself called ‘Toruk’. And while this wasn’t because of the SNL skit, the producer said that the skit pointed out how impactful the movie had been. It’s always the little things.
