Goat or Mid? Fans are Divided Over This Aspect of Jujutsu Kaisen
Jujutsu Kaisen had taken the world by storm when the anime reached our screen in 2020 and even before when the manga appeared on Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018. With well-written characters and a riveting plot, not to mention the explosive action sequences, this anime soon became one of the most loved Shonen anime. However, the praise and love for the show is not all-consuming because there is a debate brewing on Twitter over a surprising aspect of the show.
Often praised for its visually mesmerizing fight sequences and well-written characters, Jujutsu Kaisen has one more reason for creating a permanent place in its fans’ hearts: its female characters. Since the release of the first season in 2020, the show received much love for taking a different approach to writing its female characters.

When you think of anime and manga, even one in the Shonen genre, it is easy to find female characters who are highly sexualized through the illustrations and dumbed down with a lackluster character arc. Of course, there are exceptions to this like Haikyuu, Psychopass, My Hero Academia, Pokemon, etc., and Jujutsu Kaisen is one of them.
With strong characters like Maki Zenin and Nobara Kugisaki, who have their own goals and arcs, the anime is a refreshing experience for fans who wanted more from female characters than age-inappropriate clothes and a blushing mess. But not all fans seem to agree that Jujutsu Kaisen women are well-written, sparking a debate if they are GOAT or Mid.
Fans can’t decide if Jujutsu Kaisen female characters are GOAT or Mid
Loyal fans of the show are convinced of one fact: Jujutsu Kaisen has female characters that are strong and unique. A majority of them can’t get over the character development of the female cast. We usually have female characters who are mere means for jokes and plot progression. However, the women of JJK have their own agenda and goals in season 1 AKA they are far from being the traditional “waifu” characters.
The crème de la crème of the female cast in Jujutsu Kaisen has to be Maki, whom the fandom loves and adores with a passion for her character arc. She and the healthy dynamic she shares with Nobara is one of the chief reasons why fans think the JJK women are GOAT.
On the flip side, we have fans who feel none, or at least not all, female characters in Jujutsu Kaisen deserve the appreciation they are getting. To some, the way these women are written is bare minimum or “mid,” as the internet puts it. According to others, Maki “hard carries” the show and others are not distinct or memorable.

It is safe to say that this debate will carry over when the next season drops. Fans will probably get a better idea of how the anime treats its female characters in the next installment and if the current charm will carry forward.
