Anime Fans Show Hope for ‘One Piece’ Live-Action as Iñaki Godoy and Showrunners Introduce Massive Sets
Although production on Netflix’s upcoming One Piece series is still ongoing, co-showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, as well as actress Iñaki Godoy, attended this year’s Netflix Geeked Week. There the trio promoted their new show and gave fans a sneak peek at what they’ve been working on. While the trio didn’t have much new footage from the series to show, a new behind-the-scenes production film Netflix released revealed that One Piece may be adding a level of heat that the streamer’s past live-action anime adaptations have lacked.
One Piece sets look massive in new footage by Netflix
Before showcasing the concept art video, Iñaki Godoy and showrunners Steve Maeda and Matt Owens introduced the two-minute film. The last image, the Baratie Bar from One Piece’s East Blue narrative arc, is ripped aside to reveal the gigantic ship being built in real life, with every quirky, colorful detail from Eiichiro Oda’s manga preserved.

A timelapse and accompanying clips show the Baratie Bar being pieced together, from its massive fish head prow to the bar itself within.
The video reveals a few additional sets as well, including a shaky pirate town. And brief glimpses of two more One Piece ships, Miss Love Duck and the Going Merry.
The creators indicate that some of the sets took many weeks to build due to the amount of attention necessary. Surrounding The Baratie Bar ship are floating ducks, making it a “massive” setting.
People’s reaction is insane
People have been debating the quality of the live-action adaptation since Netflix confirmed it in 2020. However, after today, the whole fandom of the immensely popular Manga and Anime series seems to know for sure that this live-action of One Piece by Netflix will be different.

These are just some of the thousand positive comments that the YouTube video has. It is a great reaction that no one was actually predicting, considering how poorly live-action normally does among fans.
However, after the extremely warm reaction to One Piece, Netflix must also be feeling good about its Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action adaptation as it has the largest budget of any Netflix Original.
