After Neil Gaiman’s decade-long attempt to have his dark fantasy comic book series, The Sandman, turned into a live-action, it is finally coming to Netflix. The streamer unveiled the first look of the adaptation during the Netflix Geeked week. Although the initial announcement was received with excitement, others have come forward with gripes against the show, especially the casting. Gaiman has always fired back at the trolls who keep trolling the actors and their hard work to bring the comic book to the screen. At the San Diego comic con, the author opened up about his stance against the trolls. 

Neil Gaiman knows better not to “feed” the trolls but won’t tolerate non-fans trolling the show 

The Sandman had a rather interesting casting. It chose to cast Black actor, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Gwendoline Christie as the genderless Lucifer, and Non-binary actor, Mason Alexander Park. However, some of the subscribers had a problem with the “wokeness” of the show. But Neil Gaiman didn’t skip a chance to silence the haters and root for the casting choice. According to him, fans of the comic book series will understand the casting choices. However, all he got was people who had never read the original comic complaining about it. 

He explained, “I know the rule is you’re meant to ignore the trolls and not feed the trolls. But I would look at people sounding off on Sandman who were obviously not Sandman fans. And I mostly decided I was done with it.”

He further added, “Occasionally I do feel like I’m taking an enormous sledgehammer to squash the tiniest ants, and you really shouldn’t. But then again, they can be really irritating sometimes, and I’m proud of what we made.”

When is The Sandman arriving on Netflix? 

The Sandman will hit the streamer on August 5. The story follows Dream aka Sandaman the ruler of dreams and imagination as he escapes from his century-long captivity. He goes on a quest to retrieve his totems and seek vengeance on his captors.
