Amid a Slew of Collaborations With the Director, Netflix Cancels a Much-Awaited Sequel From Zack Snyder
In this era of streaming entertainment, there is no dearth of content. Capturing even a figment of the imagination of the 21st-century generation is a feat in itself which is marked by consuming content on a binging basis. Coming across as one who truly left an indelible mark is Zack Snyder, whose 2013 Man of Steel with Henry Cavill still stands as a cinematic gem. However, an unceremonious exit from their tentpole superhero franchise fated both the director and the actor.
While Cavill is reinventing himself with new franchises, Snyder has embarked on a love affair with Netflix. The director, on the verge of kick-starting a rebellion franchise, had some heart-breaking news for the fans.

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic when time was gloomy and hard to pass within one’s homely confines, Zack Snyder returned with a bang. In May 2021, the director landed Dave Bautista and his team with the Army of the Dead. The zombie-thriller with its trope of heist served its purpose of reprieve as well as establishing his stronghold in Netflix. Now two years later, Total Film magazine (via Giant Freakin Robot) reported that the animated sequel to it, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, stands canceled.
Interestingly, the zombie thriller had a lot of “mythology” that never went past the script. The connections and additional stories were to make their way in the form of sequels and prequels, at the forefront of which was this binned project. Despite being production-ready and finished enough to air, Netflix booted it out of schedule for unknown reasons. The animation was to explore Bautista’s character’s origins. The cancellation comes after many rounds of delays attributed to “technical reasons”.
However, there is still hope. The director has turned around an interesting twist with his 2021 Netflix project leading straight into another.

A master at his craft, Zack Snyder excellently weaved through a narrative that stitched together all his released and upcoming Netflix ventures. His December 2023 two-part space opera, Rebel Moon, will stand directly connected to Army of the Dead universe. Rather, the connection is so significant that no projects connected to the zombie franchise will air until the Star Wars rival has completed its run.
Interestingly, a crossover with an animatronic alien from the 2021 flick appearing as a full-fledged live version is already in the upcoming flick. Rebel Moon aims to be a no-holds-barred vision of Snyder for Star Wars that George Lucas had rejected. Going toe-to-toe with the juggernaut Disney franchise, it hopes to one-up it by offering a ‘mature’ take.
