Netflix is currently in a mixed bowl of soup. On one hand, when SAG-AFTRA strikes have delayed some of its trademark shows and movies, it is cherishing incredible success with its live-action adaptation of One Piece. For long, that success had eluded Netflix, but now that it is here, the streaming juggernaut is showing no signs of stopping. Its next live-action adaptation based on a Nickelodeon animation, Avatar: The Last Airbender, is to release soon.

The show, which has been in development for years, will usher in an era where Netflix looks to have finally cracked the code for making successful live actions.

Avatar: The Last Airbender explores the themes of fantasy, action, drama, and adventure. Moreover, the complex and diverse storyline makes plenty of room for masterful character arcs. Thus, it is this unique trait of the show to create engaging characters in equally thrilling plot lines that have both younger and adult audiences hooked.

Notably, the live-action version is helmed by Albert Kim who will bring to life all the unique martial arts forms showcased such as ‘bloodbending’ and ‘metalbending’. Now, as per reports, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the same is expected to be released in February 2024.

In a slight stretch, it could even be comparable to the themes of Netflix’s own The Witcher. However, the two shows differ in their underlying source material. While the formerly Henry Cavill-starred show derives its source from the books of Andrzej Sapkowski, The Last Airbender is based on ancient philosophies. Specifically, towards the Asian culture and themes of water, air, fire, and earth. All Netflix needs to do now is avoid repeating The Witcher’s mistakes and respect the source.

Fortunately, Netflix seems to have learned from its mistakes, as its latest live-action adaptation has broken all its records.

Netflix finally gets its live-action adaptations right with One Piece

The beloved shonen manga by Eiichiro Oda and its subsequent live-action adaptation by Netflix was a smash hit following its release on August 31 this year. The popularity of the show was such that it dethroned both Stranger Things and Wednesday by being the number one Netflix show in 84 countries. Additionally, the show was subject to immense love, as it debuted with a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix managed this feat by making several changes to its production style. Firstly, Netflix onboarded Eiichiro Oda himself as an executive and creative consultant. The original creator ensured that the show followed his original vision and style. Additionally, the show stuck on the same themes and storylines that made the manga popular in the first place. The result was long-time and new audiences thronging to the show.

Finally, Netflix left no stone unturned in finessing the visual effects as it crafted a breathtaking visual appeal.
