One of the show’s stars, Finn Wolfhard, recently dropped a bombshell about the creators of the hit Netflix series, the Duffer Brothers. He had earlier revealed that they have a secret project in the works. And it was not just any project, it was a spin-off of Stranger Things! What could this spin-off be about and how it will connect to the main show was anyone’s guess.

Finn Wolfhard surprised Duffer brothers with his spinoff idea

Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler on Stranger Things, revealed how he accidentally came up with the idea for the spin-off that the Duffer Brothers are working on. He shared the story during an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in January 2023. Wolfhard mentioned being on the set of Stranger Things 4 filming alongside his co-stars. They were all having a conversation speculating about their characters’ future. Wolfhard, without knowledge, playfully suggested a spin-off idea to the Duffer Brothers unaware that they had already contemplated the same concept!

One of the co-stars once seemingly joked that one day the showrunners will have the old cast again after twenty years or so. To which the actor added to the Duffer Brothers, “Oh, but if you guys are actually gonna do a spin-off, it should be this.” The Duffer Brothers were taken aback and somewhat suspicious, curious, about who had leaked the idea to him!

Wolfhard assured them that he had merely come up with it accidentally on his own, seeing it as an opportunity to expand the show’s universe. In response, the Duffer Brothers advised him to keep the idea under wraps and said, “Okay, well, don’t tell anyone!”

Nevertheless, the actor’s slip of the tongue was enough to capture fans’ minds by storm. People have made wild guesses and near-accurate predictions for the sequel’s trajectory. The 20-year-old had a beautiful coincidence. He was so creatively involved and dedicated to his show that he accidentally guessed what the creators had in their minds.

However, he didn’t mention whether he or any of his co-stars would be involved in the spinoff. He also admitted that he wasn’t aware of the release date or if Netflix had officially given it the light. Nonetheless, he expressed his excitement and curiosity to see how the Duffer Brothers would bring his idea to life, hoping that fans would enjoy it too. He is proud to be a part of Stranger Things, as he is a fan of the show himself. Meanwhile, the fifth season of the main show is expected to release with a better storyline around the summer of 2025 if the ongoing WGA SAG-AFTRA strike does not cause any further delays.
