Every once in a while, Netflix brings back timeless classics to its platform. And this time, it is a pick for lovers of psychological erotic thrillers. Netflix describes the movie plot as, “An argument about fidelity sends a married physician reeling into the night, where he finds itself in a surreal succession of sexual encounters.” Released in the 90s, the film is one of the boldest and most erotic Tom Cruise movies. The movie took around 400 days to complete shooting. Thus, entering itself in the Guinness record for the longest movie shoot taken. And now this movie is on Netflix.

Stanley Kubrick released the erotic drama in July 1999. He directed, produced, and co-wrote the movie. It stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the lead. The movie is based on the 1926 novella Traumnovelle (also known as Dream Story) by author Arthur Schnitzler. Netflix viewers can now re-live this 90s movie on their screens.

Eyes Wide Shut is based in the city of New York. It revolves around Dr. Bill Harford (Tom, Cruise) and his wife Alice Harford (Nicole Kidman).

The movie explores the intricacies of the dark world behind a mundane married life. When Dr. Bill and his beautiful wife Alice return home from a party and end up having an argument about fidelity, he leaves home upset and in double thoughts. The events lead up to him crashing into a highly classified masquerade sex party.

And what follows is a series of dangerous, sexual, dark encounters throughout the night, which tests the bonds and bounds of marriage.

Considering the theme of the movie, Nicole Kidman, in a 2020 interview with Independent, was asked about how she felt about shooting the movie with her husband, and she said, “Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.”

Nicole and Tom were a married couple back then. The movie is often interpreted to be sending underlying messages that even the people we know the best are actually strangers to us, and that our dark erotic desires all hide under a mask.
