$400 Million Worth ‘Knives Out 2’ and Daniel Craig Deserved a Better ‘Glass Onion’ Box Office Before Netflix
The end of 2022 is about to bring us a delightful Netflix experience. Most importantly, Netflix lovers are finally going to have the most-awaited sequel to the Academy Award-winning film Knives Out, called Glass Onion. The streaming giant has finally decided to bring us the film three years after its first part released.

The film is technically released in the US, but it is a theatrical release. The worst part is that, despite being released theatrically, it will only be there for one week as Netflix will be releasing it next month.
Why is Glass Onion at a loss as compared to Knives Out?
Knives Out, which was released by Lionsgate, made $27 million on its first weekend in the US. Later on, it proceeded to make $165 million there and $312 million worldwide on a short $40 million budget. Watching its success, Netflix bought the rights to not one but two sequels for $400 million in 2021.
It naturally fell into the hands of the streaming giant to have full control over the release of the sequels. Hence, on the one hand, where Knives Out made a gross of $312 million, Glass Onion is nowhere near it. The estimated budget for Glass Onion is also around $40 million, but it has not been able to make as much as its first part because Netflix only released it in theaters for a week.
The film is the sequel to an award-winning classic murder mystery. Hence, it was natural for Glass Onion to draw the audience to the theaters. However, it is believed that the critically acclaimed mystery film did well in its limited theatrical release, grossing up to $13 million (according to The Hollywood Reporter) in its week-long run in around 600 cinemas.

After Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Disney’s new animated movie Strange World, Glass Onion would have been the weekend’s third highest-grossing film. If the film were to be shown in theaters for a longer time, it would have surely been at the top.
