‘Star Wars’ Actor Adam Driver Lashes Out at Netflix and Amazon for Not Meeting SAG-AFTRA Demands
Adam Driver is soon about to drive into a Ferrari. Not a literal car, but rather the Star Wars: The Last Jedi actor’s latest movie Ferrari is about to come revving in cinema screens this Christmas. But with the current ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes, his movie seems to be the very few that have smooth releases. So, it is not surprising that the actor is upset with studios, especially the big ones.
Smaller studios such as the one producing his latest movie have met the demands of the strike but that doesn’t seem to be the case with studios like Netflix and Amazon and Driver is not happy.

In lines of the press conference for his upcoming movie, Ferrari, the actor has expressed his displeasure at Netflix and Amazon. Rather specifically on the streamers’ failure to meet the genuine demands of the SAG-AFTRA striking Union. In an interview with Variety, the actor highlighted that smaller studios such as Neon and STX International (which are producing Ferrari) have already acceded to the union’s demands, making it possible for the movie to be screened at the Venice Film Festival. However, “…a big company like Netflix and Amazon can’t?” Driver expressed his genuine disdain.
Netflix and Amazon are part of the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers). The streamers have outright rejected the union’s demands. As such, the union has not allowed the filming and production of any new shows for the streaming giants. While beloved shows such as Stranger Things and Cobra Kai are reeling under delays, Driver’s Ferrari enjoys uninterrupted screening. It has been possible because of the involved studios’ agreement with the terms of SAG-AFTRA, granting them an interim waiver. Something which the actor is “very proud” of.
Adam Driver also questioned the motive of the streaming giants’ collaboration with their actors. Primarily of their reluctance to agree to even a few of the union’s demands.

One of the biggest demands of the ongoing months-long SAG-AFTRA strikes is the protection of actors’ rights. Among other things, the union demands better pay, compensation, regulation of AI and CGI, and fair distribution of streaming revenue. Amidst the growing concerns of actors’ likenesses being misused by studios through CGI, ironically predicted by one of Netflix’s own shows, streaming royalties are a bone of contention.
Amazon and Netflix do not share royalties with the writers, actors, and other artisans involved in making the show. Again, one of Netflix’s own Daredevil writers had brought these claims to the forefront. Therefore, in order to maintain a creatively conducive environment, Adam Driver along with A-list actors such as Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, and Rachel Brosnahan, among others, have voiced their support for SAG-AFTRA.
