Netflix ‘Blonde’: Ana de Armas’ Version of Marilyn Monroe Receives NC-17 Rating From MPA
60 years after her death, Marilyn Monroe is still fresh in peoples’ minds. In the recent Netflix Marilyn Monroe biopic, Blonde, Ana de Armas will play the Hollywood sex icon. The movie was to release in 2021, but due to pandemic was pushed back to 2022. But right before its release, the MPA declared the movie NC-17. The explicit sexual content in the film has earned the film such a rating.
There are plenty of Marilyn Monroe documentaries, but none explored the troubled star’s life deeply. When she was alive, the actress was embroiled in too many controversies, one involving President John F Kennedy. Even her death to this day is shrouded in mystery. Her countless affairs, traumatic childhood, abortions, miscarriages, and rocky marriages will be the prime focus in Andrew Dominik’s directorial. This biopic isn’t a watered-down version of the complex woman that was Monroe.

Blonde is the first Netflix biopic with an NC17 rating
Blonde is the first Netflix content that received an NC17 distinction. This puts a limit on the audience that can view the film. The director hasn’t welcomed the news well either. “It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story…it’s a demanding film. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f—king audience’s problem. I’m not running for public office,” said Andrew.
But the rating makes sense because the hourglass diva had a very complicated life. Her struggle with addiction, alcohol and mental health issues could be disturbing for young viewers. She miscarried her baby twice and even attempted to kill herself. Indeed, she overdosed on drugs and was gone at the age of 36. Since Andrew didn’t want to compromise on the narrative, the biopic might show Marilyn posing nude during her struggling days. He may not shy away from the sexual assaults she faced at her foster home either.

Blonde is not Netflix’s first attempt at capturing the essence of Marlyn Monroe, since we will soon get a documentary on the actress from the streamer soon.
Deep Water’s Ana de Armas is headlining Blonde
The Cuban actress is choosing some bold roles after starring in Deep Water, which was also quite explicit in sexual content. Andrew adapted the biopic from Joyce Oates’ 2000 novel. Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, and Bobby Cannavale will also make an appearance.
