“Time loops, portals, doorways to other realms”: Why Zack Snyder’s Take on Zombies in Army of the Dead Is the Freshest Breath of Air for the Genre
During the height of the pandemic, when we were all facing a dearth of content, Army of the Dead arrived just in time to entertain the audiences. Justice League director Zack Snyder was helming the Dave Bautista-led ensemble film. Although marketed as a zombie film, the movie didn’t follow the familiar formula of so many other popular zombie films or movies like Walking Dead or Zombieland. Snyder was on a mission to deconstruct the genre, and he did!

Snyder introduced a heist tale in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. And he also added some sci-fi elements to it. The movie spawned a time loop theory. According to it the characters were stuck in a time loop and were doing the same mission again and again.

Speculations about Planet of the Dead
Netflix confirmed a sequel for the hit movie in 2021. Snyder flirted with the idea of a time loop in the prequel, so for the next sequel, Planet of the Dead, chances are that he might play with the idea of zombie portals.
“I think the time loops, portals, doorways to other realms, things of that nature, are very much in play,” he had teased. If he does plan to introduce different realms in the next film, it might include aliens too. But considering how Zack Snyder loves subverting expectations, these aliens could act as the savior of humankind. Anime series, Army of the Dead: Los Vegas is also said to arrive later this year.
