When Kanye West claimed that he could beat this five-time Grammy winner in a rap battle
During the Covid-19 pandemic, boredom inspired a lot of people to pick up new hobbies. While most people whisked away time trying to jump on the Dalgona coffee trend, two music producers came up with an ingenious idea. The Verzuz battle, which was a brainchild of Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, took the world of hip-hop and R&B by storm. And a name that is synonymous with that world, Kanye West was obviously one of the fans’ most requested artists for a battle.
Hosted on Instagram Live, two artists virtually go head-to-head in the battle. Although the contest was more of a celebration of their works, artists often got into a war of words with their competitors. And as it turns out, West felt he could win this battle against another music mogul with whom he shares decades of history.

From once calling him his favorite artist, to dissing him at the first chance he gets, it is safe to say that Drake has had quite a love-hate relationship with Ye. So in an episode of Drink Champs in 2021 when West was asked who between him and Drake would win the Verzuz battle, the ‘Donda’ rapper was quick to retort, “I’m winning every situation.” Leaving the hosts cracking up hysterically, he lifted his drink to clink his glass with one of the hosts, celebrating his quick wit.
Not known for his humble demeanor, the 46-year-old is definitely one of the more boastful rappers in the game. A fact that made his answer quite predictable, yet still very funny. But having won nineteen more Grammys than Drake’s mere five, one could say that his answer was justified.
This is not the first time that this duo has competed over their prowess in their crafts.

As they swing back and forth between beefing and making up, the artists have a Spotify-related tug-of-war that plays in the background. The artists frequently switch places between first and second in Spotify’s list of ‘artists whose albums get the most plays’. This war was recently intensified because Drake used a voice clip of Kim Kardashian to make a diss track against Ye which became a huge hit.
Regardless of their back and forth, the rappers often compliment each other on their works. But in this feud that has lasted decades, their relationship has become the kind one would mark as ‘complicated’ on their Facebook profiles. Which makes the prospect of a Verzuz battle between the two even more lucrative!
