When a Henry Cavill Prank Put a Long Standing Superman Debate to an End
Before he was robbed of his Superman part by James Gunn, Henry Cavill presented as one of the most convincing faces for the Last Son of Krypton in 2013’s Man of Steel. However, one thing that the comic book franchise’s fans have always struggled to grasp is the avatar change of Clark Kent from a regular journalist to the caped savior. This is understandable considering that the only thing separating these two distinct personalities is a costume change and a pair of spectacles.
To put this confusion to rest, Cavill pulled off an intriguing maneuver that left many shocked.

While promoting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, Cavill decided to take to NYC’s Times Square for an experiment that he later shared on his Instagram page. The point was that “the glasses are good enough” to mask Clark Kent’s hidden identity of Superman. So, he took to the streets in a Superman T-shirt as the busting city went about its business ignoring him, despite giant posters of the flick showcasing his character.
As he did this in broad daylight, it was clear that the residents of a bustling city like NYC, which is believed to be the blueprint for Metropolis, barely noticed the presence of the actual Superman. Well, he directly addressed every “doubter” in the caption of this post to mock their theories over how this could be possible. After all, it certainly seemed like it was!
Notably, the 40-year-old was always protective of his DC character’s authenticity, especially when it comes to his suit.

One thing that has remained consistent in the variety of roles Cavill has portrayed has been a tightly-fitted wardrobe. He has himself addressed this similarity in the past by revealing how his muscles had to be packed into such flattering, yet uncomfortable ensembles. However, when it came to his Superman costume, he strongly defended it. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, he claimed to absolutely “love it”.
Regardless of the missing red underwear from the classic comic book costume, Cavill was adamant about the perfection of the attire. Not to forget that it did not even carry a zipper so he could use the restroom between takes. Evidently, his love for his character was strong enough to forego such imperfections in the costume. The prank he played out in NYC certainly proved that love.
