“I am Loki of Asgard, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.” Proclaiming his goal in the first-ever Avengers move back in 2012, Loki essentially summed up his character arc. The very line would come full circle a decade later in Season 2 of Loki in ways that almost none would have guessed coming. In what is arguably one of, if not, the best character arcs in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Hiddleston poured his soul out in his likely last Marvel outing.

The tear-jerking season finale laid bare many Easter eggs and essayed a tale of redemption. Spoilers ahead; the breakdown is as heart-breaking as it is fulfilling.

Loki binds his MCU history to become the God of the Multiverse

Marking his first appearance as the God of Mischief in 2011’s Thor, Tom Hiddleston acted the grandest of MCU farewells to himself. Labeled as the harbinger of chaos, the character drifted through the sidelines throughout many stories in a quest for power. Yet, Loki season two’s finale finally gave meaning to him. Loki’s “glorious purpose” came fulfilled as he sacrificed himself to eternity to save the only ones he wanted to stay beside.

Rebirthing the multiverse with his magic, Loki finally sat on a throne at the end of time, destined to be alone. Taking the shape of Yggdrasil or the ‘Tree of Life’, mentioned way back in Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, the multiverse now flows through Loki’s hands. Describing it as a cosmic tree whose branches formed the nine realms, even Thor stands unaware of his brother’s eternal sacrifice at the helm.

Effectively rendering Loki as the root of the multiverse, the season finale also laid the groundwork for the MCU.

How the TVA is coming in to play in Deadpool 3

The Loki season two finale also included subtle hints and nods at the grand scheme of the Kevin Feige-led machine. Towards the end, Mobius mentioned a Kang variant, creating a “ruckus” in “616 adjacent realms.” To the unaided, 616 is the official name for the main MCU timeline and the scenario Mobius mentioned to be taken care of could well be Scott Lang and the gang disposing of Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Meanwhile, the very same scene also mentioned the TVA actively searching for any more of the Big Bad’s variants.

The result is a stage set for Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Deadpool 3. By all means; the TVA is more than certain to appear in this flick. Barring Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Owen Wilson’s Mobius, the rest of the show’s familiar faces will be hunting and recruiting some of the best heroes to face a massive threat in Avengers: Secret Wars. Thus, just when Marvel seemed to be losing its grip, the juggernaut came back roaring to redeem itself.
