In May 2020, when Ryan Reynolds acquired Wrexham AFC alongside Rob McElhenney, the deal was largely described as “interesting” by observers as they walked the cautious line of moderation. The concept of Hollywood actors partaking in a football club’s ownership was not new. But that of Hollywood owners buying a football club and actively being involved in its growth to the point that they had more stakes in the football fandom than that of a film was definitely unheard of. This is why when Reynolds and McElhenney approached players to join their club, they were met with skepticism. Especially by Paul Mullin.

As the Welsh club owners prepared to bring it back to its previous glory, they scouted some of the best-known talents in English football. This naturally landed them at the doorsteps of the goal-scoring maestro, Paul Mullin. Now, two years later, and one league higher since he first joined, Mullin reflects on how he proved to be quite difficult to scout for the owners.

In an interview with the official EFL website, Mullin said, “They had to win me over in terms of what the plans were for the club.”

Unlike Ben Foster, who did not take much coaxing to join the club, Mullin wanted to know their goals. After joining in 2021, he now looks at his decision to join Wrexham AFC as one of his best. It is not just because the club has grown in popularity and on paper, but also because of his bond with the owners.
