‘Stranger Things’ Matthew Modine Voices His “Unwavering Support” for SAG-AFTRA Protest
In the wake of the SAG-AFTRA, actors’ strike, over the dystopian use of generative AI, has taken newer shapes and forms. Individuals from all walks of life are standing in solidarity with the actors. The protest is gaining traction at a very stupendous pace. Filmmakers and actors are subjecting the APMTP’s policy on the usage of generative AI to mass ridicule. Coveted International Film Festivals like Venice and Toronto can face the wrath of the ongoing strike. However, the Galway Film Fleadh in Ireland is the first to witness the aftermath of the strike, resulting in the calling off of an entire promotional event.
At the Galway festival, Stranger Things’ Dr. Brenner was also present to take part in a Q&A for his upcoming flick. While the festival was called off, the actor voiced his support for the protesting actors.

Modine, the former president of the SAG, did not engage in the promotional events of his movie, The Martini Shot, which was all set to debut at the Fleadh. He voiced his support to the actors on strike in a Q&A session at the festival. His co-star and fellow SAG member Fiona Glascott actively supported this generous endeavor. Modine addresses, “Let us stand united, artists, filmmakers, and industry professionals, in unwavering support of the strike” (via Deadline).
When talking about the promotion of the movie, Modine said a bit about its filming. He addressed that it is the culmination of a passion-driven journey. The night when the Full Metal Jacket actor showcased his unwavering support was intended to mark the grand unveiling of his movie. However, he acknowledges that sacrifices must be made along the arduous path toward achieving victory due to unforeseen circumstances.
Galway Film Fleadh is affected by the strike. It makes it one of the first festivals to be impacted. However, it will affect a lot many fall festivals coming their way.

SAG-AFTRA has not only taken film productions under its wrath. With Deadpool 3 stopping the filming ahead of its solidarity towards the strike, festivals are next. The Telluride, Toronto, and New York film festivals are coming along the way of the strike. With actors showing solidarity, it becomes practically impossible to premiere films. As the Venice Film Festival approaches, a lineup of highly anticipated movies awaits their grand screenings. However, the glimmering red carpet that once welcomed a parade of celebrities may not dazzle as brightly this year.
The New York Film Festival, too, eagerly prepares to showcase captivating films such as May December. Yet, a lingering sense of uncertainty hovers over whether non-guild-affiliated movies will secure premieres at these prestigious festivals. The anticipation builds as filmmakers and audiences alike eagerly await further updates.
