You might be familiar with him playing the wicked Deadpool, the charming and adventurous Guy, or the adorable and loyal Pikachu. However, were you aware that Ryan Reynolds is also a real-life superhero who has completely changed the fortunes of a town and captured the hearts of its residents? With his latest project, he has propelled this town and its people into the spotlight.

Wrexham was once a town known for coal mining, steel production, and brewing. Unfortunately, it faced a downturn, resulting in joblessness, poverty, and social issues. The local football club, Wrexham AFC, also experienced setbacks. It dropped out of the English Football League in 2008 and remained in the fifth-tier league ever since. However, everything took a turn when the Deadpool 3 star arrived.

Accompanied by his friend Rob McElhenney, they purchased Wrexham AFC for £2 million. Furthermore, his involvement extended beyond owning the club. He took on the role of producing and starring in a documentary titled Welcome to Wrexham, which chronicled their journey as club owners and interactions with the town community. Notably, the series resonated with both viewers and critics, garnering six Emmy nominations during its first season.

Ryan Reynolds’ documentary series, Welcome to Wrexham, has not only received an Emmy for the Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, but has also been renewed for a second season. The upcoming season will continue from where the first left off capturing the excitement of Wrexham AFC’s promotion to the National League. Moreover, the series will delve into the challenges and opportunities that arise when playing at a higher level and it will also shed light on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on both the club and the local community.

The 46-year-old’s obsession with Wrexham AFC may have affected his other projects negatively. It seems he has been spending more time in Wales than in Hollywood. Perhaps he is prioritizing his football duties over his film commitments. Moreover, Reynolds wants to include more references to Wrexham AFC in the film such as featuring the club’s players. Marvel Studios might be right to fear that he may alienate some fans who are not interested in football or Wrexham AFC. Moreover, the ongoing WGA SAG-AFTRA strikes have already made matters worse for the star’s upcoming mega-collaboration with Hugh Jackman.
