Three years ago, two global movie stars decided to back an underdog team and bring them back into the limelight. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney won the majority in the voting for their takeover of Wrexham AFC in November 2020. And three months later, in February 2021, the Hollywood heavyweights finally took control of the football league. An EFL promotion, an Emmy-winning documentary, an FA Cup win, and much more have happened in these three years.

To mark the occasion, Ryan Reynolds shared a heartfelt message reflecting on his tenure thus far as the Wrexham AFC team’s owner and his experience.

Not just for the Wrexham team, but this ownership deal has also been great for Ryan Reynolds. It not only enabled him to leverage significantly more than even a very famous actor could to start financing his own projects but also garnered him huge respect for building and reigniting a community. On the third anniversary of his ownership, Reynolds took to X, formerly Twitter, to express just how grateful he is for these “incredible three years”.

The actor expressed his “privilege and honor” to have been a part of this “incredible town”. Reynolds also took this celebration to his Instagram and shared a story stating how knowing McElhenney and the team of Red Dragon has been the “greatest honor” of his life. From major advancements to lucrative sponsorships, a lot has happened for the Red Dragons ever since the Hollywood messiah came to the rescue. And there is more to come in the future.

Wrexham has garnered a global fan base through its documentary series, with a third season scheduled for release in 2024. Despite this, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney recognize the importance of achieving success on the field to sustain their popularity. Meanwhile, the men’s team is gearing up to challenge Bradford City on Saturday to reclaim automatic promotion spots. At the same time, the women’s team, now semi-professional in the Welsh top-flight, will clash with Cardiff Metropolitan Ladies on Sunday.

With their recent promotion to League Two, Wrexham will enter the English Football League for the first time since 2008. Should Wrexham fail to secure a top-three finish, their focus will shift to securing a place in the play-offs, necessitating a finish anywhere between fourth and seventh. Teams placed fourth to seventh will compete in the semi-finals and the winners will go to the final at Wembley. If Wrexham wins the final, it will earn them a promotion to League One.
