In March, the Welsh Club reported facing a loss of £3m after they took over the Wrexham AFC, which was already in a financial crunch. The win against Boreham Wood marked the team’s first promotion to the EFL League Two after 15 years. However, it was a challenging journey for both the owners and the team. In the first episode of the show, Reynolds and McElhenney addressed their financial distress and said, “If we don’t get promoted this year, the club is completely, totally, and wholly unsustainable”.
Both the stars made sure to not let the team get burdened with this pressure. As per McElhenney, this would have been a contradiction to what their “original promises were”. However, their monetary crisis was something that was out in the open. This took a toll on the owners, players on the field, and even the community who supported the team. The stars of the Emmy award-nominated series went on to say that if they miss the promotion, they “are f*****”.
However, the Red Dragons reigned its fans’ hopes by winning the first league title in forty-five years, owing to the guidance of Phil Parkinson.
