It is difficult to peel one’s eyes from the screen when the ever-so-stunning Sydney Sweeney is in the frame. However, when the Spokane native presents as Cecilia in her upcoming horror thriller Immaculate, viewers may find themselves squinting with dread. After astonishing everyone through Euphoria’s melodrama, the 26-year-old has been genre-hopping by dabbling in rom-coms, comic book movies, and now horror. While this is not the first time Sweeney will give the terrifying genre a swing, the plot of Immaculate is quite unusual.

Here is the story behind the plot that the upcoming flick follows.

The origins of Immaculate

The plot of Immaculate is a work of fiction penned by screenwriter Andrew Lobel. The upcoming flick appears to be one of his biggest works, besides a past steeped in writing short film scripts and gaming narratives. Lobel’s LinkedIn touts him to be a specialist in ‘world-building’ for horror, fantasy, sci-fi, etc. So the story of the woman Sweeney will portray has sprung from this author’s imagination and not the real world.

The screenplay by Lobel traces the journey of Cecilia, a deeply spiritual woman stepping into a fresh adventure at a seemingly perfect convent. Tucked away in the enchanting Italian countryside, which is also where the flick was filmed, she is initially enchanted by it all. Then, her newfound harmony starts to unravel when she stumbles upon disturbing and sinister truths hidden beneath the flawless exterior of this convent.

Besides the plot, here are other details uncovered so far about the flick.

Alongside Sweeney, the mysterious flick includes Money Heist sensation Álvaro Morte, Sweeney’s The White Lotus co-star, Simona Tabasco, and Italian actors, Benedetta Porcaroli and Giorgio Colangeli. In the production department, Sweeney’s own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, is teaming up with Black Bear Pictures to helm the flick. The Imitation Game’s producer, Teddy Schwarzman, will co-produce it alongside Sweeney.

Last month, Sweeney called the film “her baby considering the many roles she is playing in it besides lending it her production house’s banner. Meanwhile, Daytime Emmy Award-nominee, Michael Mohan is serving as Immaculate’s director. Previously, Mohan and the Euphoria star have also worked on another horror thriller, The Voyeurs, together. The movie will be released on March 22nd, allowing fans to judge for themselves if it lives up to their expectations.
