How Will Smith Saved the $1.9 Billion Franchise ‘Men in Black’?
As Will Smith suffers from a conundrum trying to revive his earlier untarnishable image following the Oscar slap, his ever-supportive fans had quite a few ideas. One opinion that is largely plastered on anyone looking for a quick shot to success in present-day Hollywood is to become a part of either one of the two most prominent superhero universes. It is a tried and tested formula that has worked for most Hollywood stars. And if Smith does decide to take the Superhero route, he has a resume long time in making to present. As long as Men In Black II in 2002.
That Men In Black is among Smith’s most successful works is not knowledge privy to his regulars. In fact, the movie is among one of the most revisited around the world. While the first franchise starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones was a ringer raking in $589.4 million worldwide for obvious reasons, the second installment did not bask in the same glory. And the fate would have carried over to Men In Black III as well, had it not been for Will Smith’s idea.
Will Smith was more than a hero for the Men In Black franchise?

It is often said about actors that prove to be exceptional in their performances that they carried the project on their backs. This definitely stands true for Will Smith. It is not to say that Tommy Lee Jones was the soul of the movie, but had Will Smith not quipped in with an idea worth a million dollars, the adored franchise would have met a disappointing ending. “Will calls me Baz. When we were shooting Men In Black II (in 2002), one night he said ‘Hey Baz, I think I have an idea for number three,” Barry Sonnenfeld said in 2012 as quoted by Vulture.
The third installment which made for the lackluster plot of the previous one and further proved to be the most successful addition was based on Will Smith’s idea.
“The basic idea was that Will’s character, Agent J, would have to go back into the past to save his partner,” said the director. This proves that Will Smith was not the hero, but the superhero behind the mostly UFO-centered, $1.9 Billion dollar, Men In Black franchise.

Is the Men in Black actor returning to the franchise?
Apart from the Superhero movies that ironically end up saving the hero that stars in them, Smith also had several other franchises to rely on. As luck would have it, the actor has already signed highly anticipated projects such as Bad Boys 4 and I Am Legend 2.

Given that he was playing safe with tried and tested franchises, fans were hopeful that there would meet Agent J again. However, after the absolute disaster that the latest spinoff starring Marvel actors, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson proved to be, Smith might refrain from returning to his most loved franchise. Unless his superhero senses start tingling and he has another blockbuster idea for a Men In Black IV.
