In 2013, amid much fanfare, Zack Snyder launched his competitor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the form of the DC Extended Universe with Man of Steel. Despite critical divisiveness, the band expanded and marched ahead with Jason Momoa showing up alongside Henry Cavill in a brief cameo in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Among the entire star cast, only Gal Gadot and Momoa would receive solo movies within the DCEU thereafter and it finally came down to the latter to hammer the last nail in the coffin.

In light of such turbulent times, fans can always turn to happier ones when the star that started it all and the one that ended the DCEU, basked in phenomenal bonhomie.

Henry Cavill once went all out while praising Jason Momoa

Counting down the screen time, Henry Cavill did not share much of it with Jason Momoa. However, when the cameras were not rolling, the story stood different altogether. Back in January 2019, a few days after the release of the first Aquaman movie in December 2018, the Superman actor could hardly shy away from commenting on that movie’s success. Taking to Instagram, Cavill posted a shirtless picture of him submerged nose-deep in the water and holding out a fork, resembling Aquaman’s trident.

The hilarious photo broke the Internet while the caption won hearts all around. “Jason, love you bro, you crushed it,” the statement concluded a heartfelt show of support. Meanwhile, previous events such as Jason Momoa sneaking behind Henry Cavill during a red-carpet premiere, showcased budding brotherhood. The Witcher actor’s impression of the DC character came close after the movie went on to earn over $1.152 billion worldwide and become the highest-grossing DC movie ever.

In sharp contrast, the freshly released sequel to Aquaman landed in theaters alongside zero fanfare though with a fair enough performance.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom officially ends the DCEU

James Gunn did indeed clear the slate with 2023’s The Flash. However, Jason Momoa’s likely final outing as Aquaman ended the canon which began with Zack Snyder. Interestingly, the sequel to such a successful DC movie did not have a red-carpet premiere nor any full-fledged promotion. Much to fans’ chagrin, the movie’s sole purpose became more clear – to sink the DCEU’s ship to oblivion. And that is precisely what played out and such a billing automatically guaranteed a low turnout.

Remarkably though, competing against strong releases such as Snyder’s own Rebel Moon, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom managed to hold its own. Thanks to the superior world-building in the first movie, director, James Wan drew sufficient crowds to open to $13.7 million. Regardless of its 36% Rotten Tomatoes score, audiences have put their weight behind the movie leading to mixed reception.
