Ryan Reynolds‘ love for superheroes is no surprise to any of the actor’s fans. After all, he did take on Green Lantern years before he embodied the smart-mouthed DC vigilante character Deadpool. While the star will go down in cinematic history for his portrayal of the Merc with a Mouth, he once shocked his loyal fans with a surprising revelation. Among his list of superheroes he wanted to portray, Henry Cavill‘s Superman made its way into the fray.

While Cavill has been a fan favorite since he took the role back in 2013, Ryan Reynolds stunned the entire world with the news of a never-heard-before audition.

Ryan Reynolds auditioned for the role of Superman

Years before Henry Cavill became the face of the age-old DC superhero, there were talks of a Tim Burton film. It was supposed to star Nicholas Cage. Although the film ultimately ended up being scrapped, Ryan Reynolds revealed last year that he had “auditioned for Superman” back in the 90s. In a segment on BuzzFeed Celeb, the Free Guy star, along with Rob McElhenney, got candid about his failed attempt at landing the iconic role.

Reynolds went on to admit that he “didn’t make it to the director’s stage.” While that may have been because he did not fit the mold they were looking for, he later ended up bagging his own iconic superhero. There is no denying that the star would have done justice to the role had he landed it. However, it could have not given fans the dark and gritty take on Henry Cavill’s red cape superhero.

Although Henry Cavill will always be the fandom’s favorite Superman, he unfortunately had to give up the role last year. This left fans with a broken heart. However, what made matters worse was his announcement about his departure from the role, days after he announced his return to Black Adam.

Henry Cavill’s short-lived adored Superman run

Last year, the world went crazy when it was announced that James Gunn had decided to recast the DC superhero, Superman. For close to a decade, fans only knew one actor who fit the mold perfectly, which was Henry Cavill. While everyone had fallen in love with him in Man of Steel, Gunn wanted a younger version of the Kryptonian which Cavill did not qualify for. What made matters worse was the fact that the 40-year-old had just promised his fans a comeback to the role in The Rock’s Black Adam.

In fact, recently fans of the franchise could not help but remember that it has been one year since the star’s comeback announcement. While the new Superman, David Corenswet, has surprised fans with his efforts to embody the last son of Krypton, fans still have unhealed wounds owing to Cavill’s sudden departure.
