Did You Know Cillian Murphy Almost Lost His Iconic ‘Peaky Blinders’ Role to a ‘Fast and Furious’ Actor?
In Hollywood, only a handful of stars have featured in as many successful films as Cillian Murphy. The Irish actor is undoubtedly one of the most loved actors in the industry. While the actor has starred in many iconic roles, Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders is the epitome of his incredible performance. However, as shocking as it may sound, the actor was not the first choice to play the role.
Given that it was Steven Knight’s work, there were plenty of fish in the sea. But the thought that someone who is not Cillian Murphy could have played Shelby is unnerving. Especially if they are associated with a franchise as loud as Fast and Furious.

During his interview with The Guardian, Cillian Murphy revealed how being cast for Thomas Shelby was a complex process. The actor revealed that creator Steven Knight had shortlisted two actors to play the character. Cillian Murphy was the second preference as Knight was leaning towards Fast and Furious star Jason Statham to take the lead. The Interstellar actor revealed that he had to convince Knight, who was a little doubtful.
Murphy admitted that he was not the most physical actor. However, determined as he was, the Dunkirk star sent a peculiar text message to Knight that simply said, “Remember, I’m an actor.” Knight admitted that it was that text from the Irish actor that helped change his mind.
