Ahead of ‘Loki’ Season 2, Let’s Dive Deeper Into the “Narcissistic” Self-Love of Tom Hiddleston’s Character
Two years back, Marvel decided to release a series entirely dedicated to the God of Mischief, named Loki. The character of Loki is appealing in the Marvel franchise. Love him or hate him, you cannot live without his miseries. Irrespective of his faking his death so many times, you still do not have any other option except to trust him. If only one Loki was not enough, the show gave us another, Sylvie. And now, Marvel is back with good news about the show.
Two days back, Marvel shared over Instagram that the God of Mischief will be coming back just as soon. October 6, 2023, will have new episodes streaming of the show on Disney + Hotstar.

Fans are all in here to get answers to their theories and see the future of their favorite character. While the show was praised for its marvelous graphics, background score, and introduction of Kang, one thing stood out so gracefully from the show, which is almost unnatural for Loki’s character.
Understanding Loki’s psyche and the so-called ‘narcissism’
When Loki and Sylvie met each other at first, they were skeptical of each other. But soon, the dynamics between them changed. Their relationship was so sacred, pious, and pure that it ended up creating a temporal lock in the sacred timeline. Amidst all of this, Kate Herron, writer-director, introduced us to the humane side of Loki: how his insecurities have shaped him throughout the universe.
However, with Sylvie, Loki is a different person altogether. Do you remember the scene where Morbius lies to him about Sylvie getting pruned and how upset he becomes? That was an insight into his mischievous mind that fell for her. “What an incredible seismic narcissist. You fell for yourself,” said Morbius to him. Though there is no denying that he fell for himself but a narcissistic? No. But, this was the first time where we saw Loki in love, an emotion he seems to be incapable of. It was not narcissism and here’s why.
With the show, Herron showed how Loki has felt for a long, long time: his desire to dominate others and rule them and create ‘chaos’ is not because he wants to rule ‘rule’ but rather only because he wants to feel ‘wanted’ and not the adopted one. He never looked into himself and hence was his denial that he functions well and he wants to rule.
But in the show, this is the first time that Loki accepts what he is: He is not running away from himself and accepting each bit he is made up of.
Embracing the Nexus: The power of Loki’s self-love
The time he spent on Lamentis with Sylvie helped him to look at and understand more of what he is. Towards the end, he says to Sylvie, ‘This is all new to me’. The ‘this’ here is the feeling of love which he is feeling for himself: the romantic relationship here is of Loki with himself. It’s a form of self-love, something which he never experienced before. It is unusual for Loki to feel love towards himself, and that is why this love created a nexus event. “That’s pure chaos. That could break reality.”

“Love is a dagger. It’s a weapon to be wielded far away or up close. You can see yourself in it. It’s beautiful until it makes you bleed.” The infamous dialogue from the show talked about what both felt about love: they do not know what it is and find it as something which will always cause them pain. But this new ‘love’ or ‘affection’ that they are feeling for each other right now, which was almost about to destroy the Sacred Timeline, is comforting for both of them. Comfort which they both were devoid of for so long.
It was this love that helped Loki to enchant Alioth, helped them walk beyond the Void, and reach Citadel at the End of Time. Though separated, fans hope to see Loki and Sylvie reunite in the upcoming season and defeat Kang, The Conqueror for good.
