After Her Infamous ‘Take Charge’ Attitude, Jenna Ortega Makes a Major Statement About ‘Wednesday’ Season 2
Jenna Ortega is Wednesday Addams in real life. Perhaps not as dark and gloomy as the Nevermore Academy’s student, the 20-year-old is certainly vocal about her thoughts and opinions like her reel self. This blunt and outspoken side of her previously got the actress into trouble. From getting backlash from the show’s producer Steven DeKnight and some fans to getting featured in writer Brandon Cohen’s sign for WGA’s strike, the consequences of admitting to having re-written a lot of her dialogues in season 1 of Wednesday have been plenty. But that didn’t faze Ortega, as she has a major update on her character’s trajectory in season 2.
Having taken up the producer’s role for the upcoming season of the Netflix hit, Ortega has much say on the show’s storyline. This is evident in how she now confirmed something she merely hinted at a few months ago.

March 2023 saw Jenna Ortega being vocal about having issues with the writers of Wednesday. During her appearance at the Armchair Expert podcast, the actress revealed that she rewrote many of her dialogues because a love triangle didn’t make sense for her character. The controversy that followed had fans comparing her obstinacy to Henry Cavill. But taking up the producers role meant, Ortega now has more say in the matters and a clear example of that is her confirmation that Wednesday will focus less on the romantic life of its lead character.
The Latina actress recently featured in Variety’s Actors on Actors alongside Elle Fanning. It is during this interview that she revealed how the new season of the Netflix series will focus more on the horror elements, as she had previously hinted in March during her appearance at Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
“We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday,” said Ortega, touching upon how the new season is still in its nascent stages of development but will largely focus on the horror elements.
This comes as a big win for fans that supported the actress when putting up a fight for her character during the shoot of season 1 earned her criticism. It is also a significant development for the actress herself, whose previous TV experiences left her feeling unheard. What changed for her with Wednesday was certainly her putting her foot down but also the director, Tim Burton’s willingness to hear her out.
Interestingly enough, Burton was also the reason Ortega took up the role in the first place.
Wednesday almost had another face
Jenna Ortega has been acting since she was a kid. She made her debut in Rob as a guest appearance and had been a part of many TV shows. While it made her a recognizable face, her heart lay in doing films. Naturally, she wanted to pivot her career into taking more film acting roles and in came the mail from the Wednesday team about the role of Wednesday Addams. Therefore, she rejected the role, despite the team multiple approaching her multiple times. What got a ‘yes’ out of her was Tim Burton.

“The only reason I went back is because Tim [Burton, director and executive producer of Wednesday] is such a legend, and we just happened to get along very well,” Ortega revealed during her interview with The Times earlier this year.
The decision worked out well for her because the show ended up being a hit on Netflix, breaking viewership records and becoming one of the OTT platform’s top shows. Despite the reluctance to play the character, she grew protective of Wednesday Addams. This fondness certainly led to us getting a splendid series with the hope of a better season 2, now that she has a say in the matters.
