Years of waiting for a The Sandman live-action series have finally paid off. The streamer revealed first look images and footage of Lucifer and she’s a beauty. Instead of Tim Ellis, Gwendoline Christie (Star Wars, Game of Thrones) is playing Satan in the Netflix live-action. A female Lucifer has thrown off the fans and they can’t have enough of her. Well, no wonder Gaiman didn’t want to create the show in a hurry. For a show that delves into all the fantastical elements of the DC universe, it’s only right that the creators take their time to do justice to the series.

First look at Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer on Sandman

We get a proper look at The Sandman’s elusive character Lucifer Morningstar for the first time in the Netflix Geeked trailer. Although she appears for a few short seconds, her wings and flaming braziers will catch your eyes. It looks like she is presiding over her Kingdom in Hell, where Dream or Morpheus visits her. In the next scene, we see her walk over to Dream and ask him, “Are you well?” If the show is true to the comics then it’s the scene where Dream has visited Lucifer’s realm to bring back his helm. It is one of his missing artifacts.

In another Twitter Update, we see Lucifer in an all-black outfit. The light shines over her causing her blonde hair to look even more contrasting with her black outfit. The Renaissance painting type hairstyle emphasizes that she’s an ancient being.

Why was Gwendoline Christie cast as Lucifer Morningstar?

Interestingly, Netflix also carries a Sandman spin-off, Lucifer. Tom Ellis plays the titular character in the show. Lucifer has masculine features in both the shows and in the comics. Although the two shows share a connection, there is a rights issue. Plus Lucifer focuses less on the mythological aspect of the series and is more of a crime procedural show. Moreover, instead of “retrofitting” the Lucifer version to The Sandman, it was better to cast a new face, Gwendoline Christie.

Netflix Geeked Week commences on June 6.
