Chris Mundy and Showrunner Elise Henderson Hint at Expanding the Ozark Universe With a Spin-Off: “I Would Call It a World-Building Show”
Ozark came back with its final episodes to finally close the Byrdes chapter. The final episodes saw the return of 2 supporting actors, a new entrance, and four shocking deaths. The creators upended fans’ expectations when they killed Julia Garner’s character, Ruth, and let the Byrdes off the hook. The ending didn’t sit well with a lot of the fans, who criticized the ending. But in spite of the criticism, it does seem that there’s a possibility for an Ozark spin-off.
Chris Mundy is open to an Ozark spin-off
Showrunner Chris Mundy has already given it a thought. But he wants the process it is organic. “If there were an organic way, I would never be closed to it,” he said. If he chooses to expand the show’s universe, he has the support of showrunner Elise Henderson. Elise is the president of MRC studios which produced the gritty crime drama, The Shining Girls and The Great.

“I think it’s going to be one of those shows that will live in the canon of great TV from start to finish. And I think that one of the coolest things about Ozark is that I would call it a world-building show. I think we built a world. There’s a universe that’s been created.”

Will it focus on Ruth Langmore’s story?
“But I’d be thrilled for that to happen, obviously Ruth has been such a great character throughout, but I think it’s got to be right for it.“I think what we don’t want to do is just put out another version just to have. I think Better Call Saul is the perfect fit, obviously, they did it so well on top of Breaking Bad, so I think it only makes sense if it works,” he explained. But ultimately it’s Mundy and Netflix’s call.
